The results of the 43rd edition of the Nature Picture of the Year competition were announced on Saturday 28.10. Nature Picture of the Year festival in Helsinki. The Nature Picture of the Year was Jetro Luhtaa’s “Gateway to the Fell”, a dramatic image of a rainbow in a spectacular large fell landscape.
The Nature Picture of the Year, the series winners of the competition and the other images awarded in the competition form the Nature Photos of the Year 2023-exhibition, which is now on display at Maretarium until 3.12.2023.
The stunning atmosphere and balanced composition of the landscape photograph chosen as the Nature Picture of the Year aroused admiration in the competition jury at first sight.
“Experiencing such an arresting situation and capturing it perfectly successfully is at the core of nature photography”, the jury praises the atmosphere conveyed by the Nature Picture of the Year. According to the jury, “Gate to the Fell” is a classic, powerful landscape image with front, middle and rear backgrounds.
The Nature Picture of the Year 2023 competition collected a total of 11,089 images from 690 different photographers. As in previous years, there were nine series in the competition. In each competition category, the jury selected the series winner, 2nd and 3rd prizes and honorable mentions, and finally the Nature Picture of the Year from among the series winners in the traditional categories.
The aim of the Nature Picture of the Year competition is to tell about the diversity of Finnish nature, its views and events, as well as the experiences and insights photographers have experienced in nature. The Nature Picture of the Year is a visually impressive photograph that demonstrates the art of photography and whose central message is Finnish nature.
The Nature Photographs of the Year 2023 exhibition is included in the entrance ticket price to Maretarium.
