The ziege is an unusual looking fish. Its pectoral fins are “wing-like”, its belly is pointed and the whole body is like the blade of a sword. The lateral line, which is found in the lower part of the body is wavy, enabling the fish to detect enemies threatening from below. The mouth of the ziege projects upwards, which gives an indication that the ziege searches for insects from the surface of the water to feed on. Ziege generally swim individually and close to the surface. In Finland, they are encountered in the eastern Gulf of Finland, and the only lake they are found in is Lake Saimaa.
